Strength of shapes

Hi all,

Welcome back to the Spring semester and Foundation 1.

In the last experiments in Basic, you used straws and paper to make towers, bridges and for the male students, a firing device. Think about how yoy increased the strength of the paper as well as how the use of thread strengthened your straw bridges. Before your next experiment task, try to find out what a cantilever is, then think about how you would make one using straws.

I like the idea of class experiments using simple tools. I assume the firing device comment was because the boys had to use their peashooters.

Hi Chris,

You're partially right in that it was the male students who created a firing device, but it was made from newspaper, elastic bands and tape. They had to design it themselves, but this was after the bridge and tower tasks.

Hi Jen, I'm not sure where it will go from here, but I hope to get the students to start commenting once we start next week.
